why we celebrate

Juneteenth has been a day recognized by African American Brothers and Sisters for some time now, yet only recently has this day captured the consciousness of our entire country. As we continue to wrestle with a national history rooted in racial inequity, and the ongoing pursuit of justice for all, the Micah6:8 group (a diverse group of South Holland residents) gathered to consider how best we can remember, celebrate and pursue a better future as a community.

We desire to see Juneteenth become an important day in the life of South Holland, a marker on the road of progress toward a preferred future. This year, we will be hosting an event on Saturday, June 18, from 10:00am to 2:00pm at the new campus of Unity Christian Academy, located at 700 E 170th Street, South Holland. Throughout the day, guests will have the opportunity to learn more about important Black historical figures and events that have shaped who we are today; celebrate through music, spoken word and praise dancing; enjoy food with one another and share ideas about how we can shape a future together as a community.
