who we are

A Brief History

The Micah6:8 Group came together during the summer of 2020 shortly after the world shut down from Covid and when tensions soared in the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd. We wanted to do something meaningful that challenged the inequity we saw all around us and to work towards a more just world so, working with the Village of South Holland, we helped to organize the first Unity Walk down South Park Ave in honor of Juneteenth.

After a second Unity Walk in 2021, the Micah6:8 group desired for more opportunities to work in cooperation with those in the Village of South Holland to help our Village be proactive in the fight for justice. In 2022 our first celebratory event will be held in honor of Juneteenth.

Who We Are

Micah6:8 is a group of diverse residents who love living in South Holland, IL. We recognize the unique opportunity we have in our country to ensure that we don’t dismiss or forget the past, but embrace a shared history that is filled with progress and pain.

Steve & Sally Blom

Residents of South Holland since 2018, Steve and Sally have 3 children and are active members of South Suburban Vineyard Church. Their children attend Unity Christian Academy and Calvin Christian School in South Holland. Sally serves as a Senior Web Developer with the National Association of REALTORS® and Steve serves as the Executive Director of Bright Promise Fund. It is a gift to be a part of the South Holland community, to join with neighbors and friends to consider who we were, who we are and dream of who we are called to be, together.

Michael Obaiye Cannon

Michael has been a resident of South Holland since 2015 and is an active member of the Apostolic Faith Church (pastor Dr. Horace E. Smith), in Chicago. He teaches high school level physics (and other sciences) at Chicago Vocational High School. He is excited to live in the South Holland community where family, faith, and Christian fellowship is valued along with industry.

Randy & Wendy Moes

Residents of South Holland since 2001, Wendy and Randy have 4 children and are active members of Pullman Christian Reformed Church. They both serve at Calvin Christian School - Wendy is the Spanish teacher and Randy the principal. Deeply appreciative of how they can live intentionally in a diverse community, they believe that South Holland has a unique story to tell and a vision to live out. In their spare time you can find them running and biking and exploring all the city of Chicago has to offer.

Dewoinne & Lisa Meeks

With the desire to move out of the city and to start a family, the Meeks intentionally looked for houses to purchase in South Holland knowing that the community was a diverse place to raise their kids. Dewoinne and Lisa have been residents of South Holland since 2011 and have raised 4 children here. They are active members of the Pullman Christian Reformed Church. Dewoinne works downtown Chicago with Cubic Corporation managing the maintenance of all the public transportation fare collections. Lisa has been a teacher at Calvin Christian School since 2014. Their two oldest children attend Calvin already with their two youngest hoping to head there soon.

John & Charlotte Purnell

Residents of South Holland since 1998, Charlotte and John are deeply dedicated to this thriving, diverse and family friendly community. They have 3 sons and are active members of Abounding Life Church of God in Christ where John serves as Youth Pastor. Charlotte currently serves at Calvin Christian School as the Librarian, while John is a founding member and current Chairman at Unity Christian Academy. When this busy couple breaks away for some needed free time, they love reading, camping, and volunteering with children.
